Curtis Salgado was great
Saw Curtis last night at Humphries Backstage Lounge in San Diego. The band was cookin although the mix left a little to be desired. It is the peculiarities of the establishment's sound system. Curtis vocals are incredible in depth of soul, control, riffing, vibrato, iron clad growls, falsetto and passion. His harp playing was rock solid for this blend of blues, soul, funk, r&b and rock and roll. What really got me was his harp solo on Need a Woman to keep me in line. This is where Curtis shows you his unique style. The repetitive quarter note precision on the low and high end in second position that leave me exhilarated and exhausted. Usually only get that over sensation from Rod Piazza and the Flyers. Jakob was hot on lead guitar and Ben Wright grooved on the 7 string bass and scats with such a velvet touch. So glad they came to town.
Curtis is on national tour promoting his new album Strong Suspicions. It is hot and try out his earlier release of wiggle. Curtis uses his harp sparingly on his recordings and also his soul riffing occurs on his live performances. Don't miss his intro to the Harder They Come.
He is also a very very decent man. A really nice person to spend time with. Do yourselves a favor and catch him.
